Earlier it was known as the gujarat stadium. Later its name was changed and renamed in honor of Sardar Vallabhai Patel. He was India’s first home minister. The Gujarat government also contributed in setting up the new stadium. The government gave 400000 square meters of land. In 2006 the stadium was known for ICC Champion Trophy. To host the tournaments the stadium was modified and 3 new pitches and a new outfield introduced. The floodlights and covered stands were also part of the modification.  In 2015 the stadium was broken and an order for a new stadium was passed. In 2020 it was built up completely. In 2021 its inauguration ceremony took place.
